Liberia Set to Inaugurate Boakai as President

Joseph Boakai is poised to take the presidential oath in Liberia on Monday, marking his electoral triumph over former football star George Weah.

Boakai, 79, secured a narrow victory in November’s runoff poll with 50.64 percent of the votes, inaugurating a six-year term during a parliamentary ceremony in Monrovia at 10:00 am (1000 GMT).

Boakai, who served as vice-president from 2006 to 2018 under Liberia’s first female president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, faces the challenges of addressing poverty and corruption in the nation of five million, haunted by civil wars and an Ebola outbreak.

During the peaceful November poll, Boakai forged alliances with local figures, including former warlord Prince Johnson, who is backing him. Boakai’s key campaign pledges include job creation, economic improvement, institution strengthening, and anti-corruption efforts.

Liberians have high expectations for his presidency, anticipating stable utilities, enhanced infrastructure, and accountability in addressing corruption.

Boakai’s administration faces the complex task of accommodating diverse supporters while delivering on promises to foster economic conditions and tackle corruption.
