The Kwale County government has initiated a goat distribution program as part of efforts to enhance the lives of local livestock keepers and increase milk and meat production.
Governor Fatuma Achani oversaw the distribution of 228 gala goats with improved genetics under the Kenya Marine Fisheries and Socio-Economic Development (KEMFSED) program.
This initiative, implemented by the national government through the State Department for Blue Economy and Fisheries with World Bank support, aims to uplift local livestock keepers from poverty and enhance the breeding of cattle, goats, and sheep in the area.
Governor Achani stressed the significance of empowering small-scale livestock farmers and fostering food sufficiency. The project seeks to multiply the local goat breed and generate employment opportunities for the region’s residents.
The agricultural empowerment program will persist until farmers can raise larger and healthier animals, contributing to increased income. Goat farming holds a vital role in local economic activities, food security, and the livelihoods of livestock keepers.
The initiative is structured to ensure sustained food security and livelihoods in the region over the medium to long term.
