Last Group of Kenya Police Lands Back from Haiti

The final group of 150 officers from Kenya’s National Police Service has returned from Haiti, marking the end of the latest phase of the country’s role in the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission.

The officers landed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) alongside Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Inspector General Douglas Kanja, who had been in Haiti for official meetings. They were welcomed by senior government officials and top police commanders.

Those present included Monica Juma, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna, Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Abraham Sing’Oei, and Deputy Inspectors General Eliud Lagat and Gilbert Masengeli.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the National Police Service confirmed that the officers had completed their assignment under the multinational mission in Haiti.

The team was part of Kenya’s contribution to stabilisation efforts in the Caribbean nation, where authorities have been grappling with widespread gang violence and insecurity. During their deployment, the officers worked alongside the Haitian National Police to restore order, safeguard key infrastructure, and protect civilians.

Their return follows earlier rotations of Kenyan personnel under the MSS mission, as part of a phased withdrawal and restructuring process.

Kenya has played a central role in the United Nations-backed mission aimed at supporting Haiti in addressing escalating insecurity. The operation has involved coordinated efforts to stabilise high-risk areas and reinforce public safety.

Security officials say the mission is now shifting toward a broader multinational setup under a proposed Gang Suppression Force, which will gradually assume responsibilities.

The return of the final contingent signals a reduction in Kenya’s frontline involvement, even as global partners prepare for the next stage of security operations in Haiti.

The National Police Service described the milestone as a significant step in Kenya’s participation in international peacekeeping and security initiatives under the United Nations.
