Kuria Explodes After Gachagua Called His Party a “Wheelbarrow”

Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has hit out at former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, branding him a dangerous individual following remarks that appeared to belittle Kuria’s Chama Cha Kazi party.

In a post shared on X, Kuria was responding to comments made earlier by Gachagua, who described Chama Cha Kazi as a “wheelbarrow.” Kuria said that although he did not initially support President William Ruto’s re-election, he now backs it.

Kuria warned that Gachagua had picked a fight with the wrong person and vowed to confront him head-on going forward. He accused the former deputy president of being more dangerous than President Ruto himself.

Gachagua made the remarks while speaking at the burial of Alice Wangari Gakuya, the mother of Embakasi North MP James Gakuya, held at Makomboki Primary School in Kigumo, Murang’a County. During his address, he urged leaders and residents of the Mt Kenya region to remain united, cautioning that political fragmentation weakens the region’s influence in future elections.

He called on voters to shun emerging political parties and maintain a single, united political front, arguing that the region’s voting power is only effective when it speaks with one voice.

Gachagua warned that the rise of smaller political outfits would only serve outside interests by diluting Mt Kenya’s bargaining power. He specifically mentioned parties linked to Moses Kuria, former Kiambu governor William Kabogo, and Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri, questioning whether they were anything more than political “wheelbarrows.”

The former deputy president also cautioned residents against new political formations reportedly being planned in Murang’a County, urging them to reject what he described as political traps.

His comments come amid increased political activity in the Mt Kenya region, as leaders aligned to different camps intensify mobilisation efforts following shifting alliances and internal realignments. With its large voting bloc, the region remains a critical battleground in upcoming elections.

Gachagua insisted that unity is Mt Kenya’s greatest strength, warning that once divided, the region loses its ability to effectively negotiate for development and national representation.
