KRA Seizes Sh72.2m Worth of Illicit Cigarettes in Mombasa

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has confiscated a shipment of contraband cigarettes valued at about Sh72.2 million in Mombasa, following intelligence-led surveillance by the Joint Port Control Unit (JPCU) with assistance from international agencies, including Interpol.

The cargo originated in Cambodia and passed through several countries before landing in Kenya, with documentation indicating South Sudan as its intended destination.

During inspection, officers uncovered 1,083 cartons of illegal Supermatch, Dunhill and Marlboro cigarettes. Authorities noted that Supermatch is a brand legally produced in Uganda and Kenya, raising concerns about counterfeiting and illicit distribution networks.

KRA said the seizure highlights its ongoing efforts to curb illegal trade and safeguard public health, noting that illicit cigarettes deny the government tax revenue and may expose consumers to dangerous substances.

The crackdown is in line with the World Customs Organization’s 2026 theme, “Customs: Protecting Societies through Vigilance and Commitment.”

KRA has appealed to members of the public and industry players to report suspicious trade activities via its hotlines, the iWhistle platform or by visiting the nearest KRA offices.
