Kisii: 4 Sentenced to 40 Years in Jail for Lynching Witchcraft Suspects

Four individuals have been sentenced to prison for their involvement in the brutal lynching of four people accused of witchcraft in Kisii County.

On January 22, 2025, the Kisii High Court handed down sentences following the incident in Banda Sub-location, Marani Sub-County, on October 17, 2021.

The suspects—Amos Nyakundi Ondiek, Chrispine Makwaro Ogeto, Hesbon Ogondi Gichana, and Evans Ogeto Okari—were apprehended after alarming reports were made by the area Assistant Chief. The initial report indicated that two individuals had been lynched over witchcraft accusations. When authorities arrived, they discovered two more victims, whose bodies had been burned beyond recognition. The victims were later identified as Jemima Mironga (60), Agnes Ototo (57), Sigara Onkware (62), and Sidenge Mayaka (85).

The investigation, led by DCI Marani detectives, has spanned three years. On Wednesday, Justice Kiarie sentenced Amos Nyakundi Ondiek, Hesbon Ogondi Gichana, and Evans Ogeto Okari to 40 years in prison for each charge, with the sentences to run concurrently.

Chrispine Makwaro Ogeto was sentenced to 15 years for each count, also to be served concurrently.
