Gaborone, Botswana – Nov 9– Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has expressed Kenya’s strong backing for Raila Odinga’s candidacy to lead the African Union Commission (AUC) during his official visit to Gaborone.

This comes shortly after Kenya officially endorsed Odinga’s bid, positioning him as a leader capable of addressing Africa’s conflicts and spearheading the continent’s recovery from poverty.
While in Botswana, Kindiki, representing President William Ruto, held bilateral talks with President Duma Gideon Boko. Their discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in key sectors such as climate change, tourism, trade in coffee, tea, and beef, horticulture and floriculture, mining, cooperative management, and regional peace and security.

“Kenya views Botswana as a key partner in advancing continental economic development, peace, and security,” Kindiki remarked, highlighting the long-standing relationship between the two countries. “Our shared political, democratic, and trade history dates back to the time of our independence struggles.”

The Deputy President also pointed out that over 1,200 Kenyan professionals are currently working in Botswana, particularly in governance and education. “We are grateful for the warm welcome our citizens have received, as they continue to contribute significantly to Botswana’s development,” he added.
Kindiki’s talks with President Boko emphasized both nations’ commitment to enhancing climate resilience and promoting sustainable trade practices. He also formally requested Botswana’s support for Odinga’s candidacy for the AUC chairmanship, underscoring the importance of the role in promoting peace and stability across Africa.

This visit marks another important step in strengthening Kenya’s diplomatic and economic relations with Botswana, with a focus on expanding collaboration in sectors vital to both countries’ growth and regional stability.
