A businesswoman in Kirinyaga was robbed of Sh500,000 on Monday shortly after withdrawing the cash from a bank in Kerugoya town. The robbery occurred around noon as she was heading home.
According to the police, as she neared her home, she heard someone calling her while she was holding the cash in her handbag. When she stopped to investigate, she was confronted by an unknown man with a small gun.
He seized her handbag, which contained the cash, her ID cards, house keys, a piece of lesso, ATM cards, glasses, and a mobile phone.
Despite her attempts to alert others, no assistance arrived. The gunman then escaped in a car that sped off toward Karatina, accompanied by unidentified passengers.
A search for the suspect proved unsuccessful, and no arrests have been made. This incident follows a similar robbery on August 1, where a businessman was trailed and robbed of Sh1.7 million in Syokimau.
The businessman had withdrawn the money from a bank and driven to his Syokimau residence. The robbers broke into his car, which was parked at an apartment complex, and stole the cash from the boot. The gang had tracked him for nearly five kilometers and broke into his car while he was inside his apartment.
The incident was recorded by security cameras at both the bank and the apartment. The victim reported that one of the suspects, who was caught on CCTV at the bank, had waited in line with him before leaving just as the victim was served. The suspects then monitored the victim, following him from the bank to Syokimau where they stole the cash.
Police are investigating the recent robberies and suspect it might involve inside information. They have advised the public to avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
