Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) has announced an increase in hydropower generation following significant water levels in the country’s main dams within the Seven Forks Cascade.
The notable performance, particularly at the Masinga Dam, Kenya’s largest, maintaining nearly maximum water levels of 1,056 meters above sea level (mASL) for the past three days, has been attributed to strong inflows from the Mount Kenya and Aberdares catchment areas.
KenGen’s Managing Director and CEO, Eng. Peter Njenga, expressed satisfaction with the situation, stating that it will lead to cheaper electricity for Kenyans.
The company reported an exceptional operational boost at Seven Forks in the last 24 hours, with power stations achieving a peak output of over 471MW, contributing to stabilizing electricity costs on a grid scale.
Despite the rising water levels, KenGen assured residents downstream of the dams that they do not anticipate water spilling over anytime soon. Eng. Njenga highlighted the implementation of a robust water management program by engineers to prevent overflow, ensuring continued vigilance to issue alerts if necessary.
KenGen emphasized the commitment to providing competitively priced and reliable electricity to support Kenya’s economic growth in the coming years.
