Nairobi Regional Commander Adamson Bungei has assured residents of Mradi in Embakasi, Nairobi, that the area is now safe and free from any potential hazards following concerns of a possible explosion due to claims of a new gas leak.
Responding promptly to the alarm, Bungei visited the site accompanied by experts from the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) to assess the situation and address community anxieties.
After conducting an inspection at the site, Bungei, together with the experts, informed the press that all four gas tanks left abandoned after the explosion on Thursday are currently empty.
“We have conducted a thorough inspection of the area, and we can confirm that all four containers are empty. As your security commander in Nairobi, I assure you that you are safe within this vicinity,” stated Bungei.
He reiterated his availability for any support needed, encouraging residents to provide any information they may have.
EPRA experts echoed Bungei’s sentiments, confirming that the site is now devoid of any potential hazards.
To ensure security, police were deployed to the area on Monday morning after reports of a gas smell, prompting residents to evacuate their homes as a precautionary measure.
Nairobi County disaster management chief officer Bramwel Simiyu stated that they had taken necessary precautions, including evacuating the surrounding area and inviting EPRA experts to assess the situation.
Meanwhile, a man believed to be the gas station owner is in police custody. Accompanied by a lawyer, he surrendered to the police station, where detectives are interrogating him as part of the ongoing investigation into the incident. Further details about his identity are not immediately available.
