Heavy Gridlock hits Nakuru–Nairobi Highway

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued an advisory to motorists after a massive traffic jam paralyzed the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway on Thursday night.

The congestion, which began around 8:30 pm between Naivasha and Kikopey, was triggered by lane indiscipline and a surge of vehicles from Gilgil, where thousands had attended the National Youth Service (NYS) pass-out parade earlier in the day.

In a statement, KeNHA said traffic police are working with its officers to help clear the snarl-up and restore normal flow, while urging motorists to remain patient and avoid overlapping, which worsens the gridlock.

To ease movement, the authority advised motorists to use alternative routes:

  • From Gilgil: Gilgil–Olkalou–Dundori–Lanet
  • From Nairobi: Flyover–Njambini–Olkalou–Dundori–Lanet

KeNHA added that normal traffic flow is expected to resume gradually through the morning.
