Gunmen Kill Man, Steal Seven Cows in Migori Raid

A man was shot dead in a violent cattle raid in Nyabiora village, Ntimaru, Migori County, on August 27.

Police said a group of about 16 armed men, carrying guns, bows and arrows, stormed the village around 1 pm, making away with seven cows.

During the attack, the gang abducted 32-year-old Thomas Machera. His body was later found in Transmara South, Narok County, with a gunshot wound to the chest, an arrow in his leg, and another lodged at the back of his head.

Detectives who visited the scene confirmed investigations had begun into the murder and theft. The body was moved to the mortuary for postmortem.

Authorities noted that cattle rustling has persisted in the area despite ongoing government interventions, often resulting in deaths and injuries among herders.

To counter the menace, police said additional officers had been deployed.

Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen said the government is keen on dismantling the entire network behind livestock theft. He announced plans to distribute subsidized farm inputs and extension services to help communities embrace farming as an alternative livelihood.

Murkomen also directed fresh vetting of National Police Reservists (NPRs), saying they will now operate directly under the command of local OCSs to strengthen security in rustling-prone areas.
