Kenyans Face Tough Christmas as Food Prices Soar

As Christmas and New Year approach, many Kenyans face a challenging festive season due to the rising cost of living, driven largely by increasing prices of essential food and fuel items.

An analysis by The Lower Eastern Times reveals that the price of sugar jumped 15.26 percent in November 2025, reaching Sh182.37 per kilogram compared to Sh158.23 during the same period last year.

Similarly, the cost of loose maize flour rose nearly 10 percent, from Sh67.58 to Sh74.14, placing additional strain on households that rely on staples.

Fuel prices have also climbed, with petrol now retailing at Sh185.59 per litre, up 2.35 percent, and diesel rising 2.26 percent to Sh172.64, contributing to higher transport and production costs.

Some relief was noted in energy expenses, however, as a 13-kilogramme gas cylinder fell by 0.47 percent to Sh3,132.93, and 200 kilowatt-hours of electricity dropped 0.65 percent to Sh5,676.22.

Despite these minor decreases, economists caution that the persistently high food prices are likely to overshadow the festive season for many households, with essentials consuming an increasing share of family budgets.
