Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has warned that uncertainty within the ODM leadership over backing President William Ruto’s 2027 re-election could divide the party ahead of the polls.
Speaking in Kabondo Kasipul Constituency on Saturday, Mbadi urged the opposition party to start planning for the 2032 elections, noting that Ruto’s position in 2027 is effectively unchallenged.
“We need to strategise, form sensible alliances, and think beyond 2027. The president of 2027 is already decided,” said Mbadi, a former ODM Chairperson. “There is no new candidate who can make a significant impact. This is the time to prepare for 2032.”

Mbadi challenged ODM members who are hesitant about supporting Ruto to openly declare their backing for former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua instead of wasting time.
“You cannot prepare for 2032 alone. Collaboration is key. Either we join forces with a united opposition including Gachagua and Kalonzo, or we support Ruto for a second term while laying groundwork for 2032,” he added.
The CS expressed concern over ODM leaders who claim the party will only support Ruto until 2027 under the broad-based government agreement initiated by the late Raila Odinga. Mbadi warned that disregarding the pact could strain the relationship between ODM and the President.
“We can only work with those who have proven they can collaborate with us. We cannot engage with those who have previously undermined partnerships,” he stated.
