Tragedy struck in Muthesya, Masinga, Machakos County, after a woman locked her eight-year-old daughter inside their house, set it on fire, and later hanged herself on a tree.

Residents responding to the blaze on the morning of September 3, 2025, discovered the charred remains of the girl, a Grade Two pupil at Muambani Primary School. The body of her mother, Rose Nzomo, was later found hanging from a tree nearby. Police confirmed the fire was deliberately started by the deceased.
The motive remains unclear. Both bodies were taken to the mortuary for postmortem.
In a separate incident in Gachoge, Kirinyaga County, a 42-year-old woman died by suicide after hanging herself from a mango tree with a scarf. Investigators are yet to establish the reason behind the act.
Meanwhile, police in Nakuru County are probing a fire that destroyed six houses and killed 21 goats in Bondeni area. Firefighters managed to contain the flames, though the cause of the inferno remains unknown.
Elsewhere in Girimori, Kericho County, a man was lynched by a mob after allegedly breaking into a chemist and assaulting the attendant. The woman’s cries for help drew locals who pursued the suspect and stoned him to death. His body was taken to the mortuary as investigations continue.
Police have reiterated that mob justice is a crime and urged the public to hand over suspects to authorities for due process.
