Kenya Welcomes First Batch of Visa-Free Foreigners

Kenyan immigration officials announced the arrival of the initial group of visa-free foreigners in the country, utilizing the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

The ETA, costing Sh4,600 and applied through the eCitizen platform, replaced traditional visas following the President’s directive for Kenya to become visa-free in 2024. Despite a delayed rollout, over 5,000 ETA applications have been received, with 2,141 already approved.

The government is implementing new rules, including advance screening through the ETA, subject to proposed legislative changes outlined in the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration (Amendment) Regulations, 2023. The amendments propose introducing advance passenger information (API) to enhance security and streamline travel processes.

Airlines or agents providing inaccurate data may face an administrative penalty of USD10,000. The proposed changes align with President William Ruto’s vision of digitizing immigration processes and integrating border services for enhanced efficiency and security.
