The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has relaxed restrictions on the importation of special-purpose vehicles, allowing units older than eight years and left-hand drive (LHD) models into the country under strict conditions.

In a notice issued to importers, KEBS announced that such vehicles will be permitted entry if importers provide proof of customization, documentation confirming the vehicle is operational, and evidence that it is not more than 20 years old from the date of manufacture.
“Special-purpose vehicles exceeding eight years of age and/or those with left-hand drive configurations may be imported, provided there is proof of serviceability and the vehicle is under 20 years old,” KEBS stated.
The directive introduces an exemption to Kenya’s KS 1515:2000 standards, which prohibit the importation of vehicles older than eight years and ban all LHD vehicles.
KEBS advised importers to carefully review the specific waiver requirements available on the bureau’s website and obtain approval before shipping any vehicles.
The agency cautioned that failing to follow the required procedure could result in delays or refusal of clearance at the port.
KEBS clarified that import approvals are not automatic and will only be granted after thorough verification to ensure all conditions are met.
Special-purpose vehicles, often sourced internationally, may not comply with Kenya’s typical import age limits but remain fully functional and suited for specialized tasks.
