The Ministry of ICT, representing the government, has officially acknowledged a cholera outbreak in Nanyuki, Laikipia County.
In a statement released on Friday by the Directorate of Public Communications, it was revealed that numerous cases of diarrhea had been documented at the British Army camp in Nanyuki.
“The British Army in Kenya has reported a significant outbreak of diarrhea. A distinct strain of parasite associated with captive monkeys in China has been detected,” stated the Directorate, as seen by media.
“Stay informed, maintain hygiene practices, and promptly seek medical attention if displaying symptoms.”
Cholera, as described by the World Health Organization, is an extremely contagious disease transmitted through the consumption of contaminated food or water. It manifests as severe acute watery diarrhea, with potentially fatal outcomes if untreated.
“Most individuals experience mild or moderate symptoms upon infection. Symptoms typically appear within 12 hours to 5 days. However, a small percentage of patients develop severe dehydration due to acute watery diarrhea, which can lead to death if not promptly addressed,” outlines WHO’s website.
