A soldier from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) was taken into custody following the sudden death of his girlfriend at a lodge in Kitengela, Kajiado County.
Police believe the woman may have died due to heart-related complications and plan to confirm the cause of death through an autopsy.
The autopsy is scheduled at the mortuary, according to police following the incident on Friday night.
Joseph Indege, the Kitengela Directorate of Criminal Investigations Officer, stated that the soldier was cooperating with the investigation.
The soldier voluntarily reported to military police a few hours after abandoning his girlfriend’s body at a health facility in Kitengela town.
The soldier had reserved a room at the lodge to spend time with his girlfriend, but their visit turned tragic when the woman suddenly became unconscious and had trouble breathing around 11 pm on Friday.
The soldier alerted the caretaker, and witnesses reported that they asked a tenant for help with a vehicle to transport the woman to St. Paul’s Hospital in Kitengela, where she was declared dead upon arrival.
Police suspect the woman may have already died in the lodge before reaching the hospital.
Authorities noted that the soldier and the vehicle driver were instructed by the hospital staff to report the incident to the police.
The driver claimed he was going to get help, but a few minutes later, the soldier fled, jumping over the hospital gate.
The soldier later explained to police that, fearing the consequences, he went to Kahawa Garrison, reported to Military Police, and was detained before being transferred to the Kitengela DCI office on Saturday afternoon.
Initial investigations revealed no visible injuries on the woman’s body.
Her body was taken to Shalom Mortuary for a post-mortem.
Police said such cases are frequently linked to heart attacks, according to post-mortem findings.
