JKIA Temporarily Shut Down After Mourners Breach Security During Raila’s Arrival

Operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) were temporarily halted on Thursday following a security breach during the arrival of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s body.

In a statement, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) confirmed that the suspension was necessary after large crowds of mourners gained access to restricted zones within the airport.

“KCAA informs the public that operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport have been temporarily suspended due to an ongoing security situation following the arrival of the remains of the late Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga,” said Director General Emile Arao.

Authorities said the temporary closure was implemented to restore order and ensure the safety of both personnel and mourners. A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) was issued to alert airlines and aviation partners about the disruption.

The aviation regulator urged members of the public and travellers to remain calm and stay away from the airport until normal operations resume.

“KCAA regrets any inconvenience caused and appreciates the public’s cooperation and understanding,” Arao added, noting that operations are expected to resume within two hours once security assessments are completed.

The emotional scenes unfolded as thousands of mourners gathered to witness Raila’s homecoming from India, where he passed away while receiving treatment.

Crowds of supporters and boda boda riders stormed the State Pavilion area, disrupting the official reception. The sudden surge overwhelmed security officers, with some mourners breaking through barriers or climbing the perimeter fence while chanting Raila’s name and waving twigs.

Despite the chaos, the mood remained largely calm and reverent, with mourners shouting “Jowi!” — a traditional Luo mourning chant — as the flag-draped casket was received with full military honours.

Security agencies, including the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the General Service Unit (GSU), later regained control of the situation, allowing the convoy carrying Raila’s remains to depart the airport.

The body of the late opposition leader is now being transported from JKIA along Mombasa Road to Lee Funeral Home, ahead of public viewing at Parliament Buildings.
