WhatsApp is introducing usernames in one of its most significant privacy updates yet, allowing users to connect without revealing their phone numbers.
The feature is being rolled out gradually, meaning not everyone has access immediately. However, eligible users can already reserve a username ahead of its full activation.
What is a WhatsApp username?
A WhatsApp username is a unique identifier linked to your account and always begins with the @ symbol, for example @JohnDoe123. Unlike your display name, which can be shared by multiple users, every username is exclusive to one account.
Once the feature is activated on your account, people will be able to find, message and call you using your username instead of your phone number. This offers greater privacy by keeping your number hidden from people who do not already have it saved.
If the feature has not yet been fully enabled for you, WhatsApp allows you to reserve a username in advance.
Steps to reserve your username
If usernames are available on your account, follow these steps:
- Open WhatsApp and tap the three-dot menu (More).
- Select Settings.
- Tap your profile.
- Choose Create username. If the feature is still rolling out in your region, you may see Reserve username instead.
- Type the username you would like to use.
- If it is available, WhatsApp will confirm it. If not, the app will suggest similar alternatives.
- Tap Save, then Done.
After reserving a username, it will remain linked to your account, preventing anyone else from claiming it while you wait for the feature to become active.
What if the username is unavailable?
If another user has already taken your preferred username, you’ll need to choose a different one. Certain usernames are also set aside for businesses, government agencies and public figures, making them unavailable to regular users.
You can edit or remove your reserved username whenever you wish. However, once you release it, someone else may be able to register it.
When can you start using it?
Reserving a username does not mean it becomes active immediately. WhatsApp is releasing the feature in phases, so activation depends on your account.
When your username is ready to use, WhatsApp will notify you through the app. From then on, you can share your username instead of your phone number when connecting with new people.
Until activation, nobody will be able to search for you or contact you using the reserved username.
How to chat using a username
After usernames become available, starting a conversation will be straightforward.
Go to the Chats tab and begin a new conversation. Type the person’s complete username into the search bar exactly as it appears. If the username is valid, you can select it and start chatting.
Some users may enable an extra layer of protection known as a username key. If this security feature is turned on, you’ll need to enter the correct key before you can begin the conversation.
Within the chat, you’ll see the person’s username displayed alongside their profile name. If their phone number isn’t saved in your contacts, it will remain hidden.
As WhatsApp continues its phased rollout, not every user will receive the feature at the same time. Keeping your app updated increases your chances of accessing new features as soon as they become available.
