Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has brushed off alleged curses from a section of Kiama Kia Ma elders over the contested 58-acre Githunguri Kia Wairera shrine land.

She affirmed that the government’s affordable housing project on the land will proceed as planned.

The legislator dismissed the authority of the elders behind the claims, stating that she does not follow their beliefs or rituals. She argued that she has no connection to the group or its practices.

Wamuchomba linked the dispute to a clash between traditional customs and the largely Christian identity of the local community, saying most residents do not subscribe to ritual declarations.

She defended the housing project as an important development initiative already providing jobs to local youth, warning that political interference could threaten livelihoods.

Maintaining a firm stance, the MP said she would not be intimidated by criticism or threats, insisting the project is in the public’s best interest.

She noted that dozens of young people are currently employed at the site and questioned what would happen to them if the project is halted.

Wamuchomba also referenced the historical significance of the land, tying it to the legacy of Mau Mau fighters, and questioned why it should remain unused amid rising unemployment.

Additionally, she alleged that outside forces were behind the opposition, accusing unnamed individuals of trying to block development for their own benefit.

The dispute over the Githunguri Kia Wairera shrine land has heightened tensions, placing some cultural leaders at odds with political authorities.

In a viral video, elders dressed in traditional attire were seen breaking calabashes—an act in Gikuyu culture symbolising serious grievances and invoking ancestral judgment.
