Governor Mwangaza’s Husband Interrogated in Connection with Sniper’s Murder

On Sunday, police interrogated Murega Baichu, the husband of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza, as part of the ongoing investigation into the murder of blogger Daniel Muthiani Benard, also known as Sniper.

Baichu was summoned and questioned for several hours at the Meru DCI office, accompanied by legal representation during the inquiry. This development comes amidst protests in the region following Sniper’s murder.

Miriam Guantai, a woman, was also questioned in connection with the probe on Monday.

Lenny Kisaka, the Eastern Region DCI coordinator, confirmed the interrogation, stating that investigations are progressing well. Although specific details about the questions asked were limited, sources indicated that this is part of the ongoing probe, resulting in the detention of eight suspects. A joint team from Nairobi, Meru, and Embu is conducting the investigation.

Governor Mwangaza has asserted no involvement in Sniper’s murder, urging a transparent and fair investigation.

On Friday, January 12, the prosecution requested the Kiambu High Court to extend the detention of five suspects associated with the murder for an additional 14 days to allow the police to conclude their investigations.

The suspects, Kenneth Mutua Matiri, Fredrick Muruiki Kiugi, Franklin Kimathi, Timothy Kinoti, and Murangiri Kenneth Guantai, were arrested in Meru town on January 4, 2024. The prosecution argued that releasing them at this stage could jeopardize ongoing investigations and interfere with witnesses.

The ruling on the detention extension is scheduled for Monday, January 15, 2024.
