The U.S. Embassy in Nairobi has introduced a new requirement mandating all Kenyan visa applicants to disclose all their social media handles used over the past five years.

In a statement released on Friday, the embassy specified that this information must be filled out in the DS-160 visa application form, which is required for those seeking temporary travel to the U.S. for purposes such as tourism, business, education, or medical treatment.

“Applicants must provide usernames for all social media platforms used in the past five years as part of their DS-160 visa application,” the statement read.

It further emphasized that applicants must confirm the accuracy and truthfulness of all details before signing and submitting the form.

The embassy warned that failure to include social media information could result in visa denial or disqualification from future U.S. visa applications.

This new directive is part of stricter screening procedures aimed at enhancing national security and protecting public interests.

Back in June 2025, the U.S. Department of State announced more rigorous vetting procedures, instructing visa applicants to make their social media accounts public if they had been set to private. This move was designed to allow for more thorough background checks to determine an applicant’s eligibility to enter the U.S.

“The Department of State remains committed to safeguarding the U.S. and its citizens by maintaining the highest security standards in the visa process. Receiving a U.S. visa is a privilege, not a right,” the earlier statement noted.

It added that all available information, including online activity, will be assessed during the visa vetting process, especially for students and exchange visitors under the F, M, and J visa categories.

These measures align with a broader crackdown on illegal immigration, a core part of former President Donald Trump’s policy agenda, which he heavily emphasized during his 2024 re-election campaign.
