The National Assembly has scheduled a hearing for Tuesday of next week to address impeachment charges against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Speaker Moses Wetangula announced that Gachagua may either represent himself or appoint a legal representative for the session.
Before the hearing, the Assembly will conduct public consultations from all 47 counties on Friday.
“We will hold a morning session on Tuesday, October 8, followed by an early afternoon sitting to consider the special motion. I will also pause the Wednesday morning session for a briefing on public participation,” the Speaker added.
The Assembly will allow Gachagua the opportunity to present his case either in person or through a representative, or both.
“Given that the motion will be discussed on October 8, I have instructed that the Deputy President be informed of his right to appear that day between 5 PM and 7 PM,” the Speaker stated.
Funyula MP Oundo Ojiambo called for the impeachment motion to be handled with utmost fairness, emphasizing that without fairness, the process would be meaningless.
“I hope you will guide us appropriately so that our final decision isn’t deemed invalid due to unfair treatment of the accused,” he said.
Speaker Wetangula refuted claims of bias in overseeing the impeachment proceedings.
“I have no conflicts, no vote in this matter, and no vested interest. I assure you the proceedings will be conducted fairly, in accordance with the law, the Constitution, and principles of natural justice,” he said.
