Ida Odinga appeared before the committee on Friday for vetting, outlining her vision and priorities for Kenya’s engagement with UNEP. She stressed that environmental management directly affects the quality of life for Kenyans.

“How we manage or mismanage our environment will determine the quality of life we live,” she said, highlighting Kenya and Africa’s emerging leadership in global climate action and the need for urgent measures against environmental degradation.

She assured the committee that, if confirmed, she would work diligently to protect the planet and pursue strategic environmental priorities.

Ida thanked President William Ruto for nominating her and paid tribute to her late husband, describing him as her biggest supporter. She also reflected on the strength of her mother, who raised six children alone, and said she draws courage from her family experiences, including widowhood.

She reiterated her commitment to girls’ education through the Ida Odinga Trust, a programme that helps young mothers who dropped out of school return to learning. President Ruto nominated her under the authority vested in him as Head of State.
