Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called on the government to shift its focus from building more houses to addressing urgent water and sanitation needs in Kajiado County.
Speaking during a church service in Ongata Rongai on Sunday, Gachagua said that areas like Ongata Rongai, Kiserian, Ngong, and Matasia already have sufficient housing but continue to struggle with access to clean water and adequate sewer systems.
“I urge the government to listen to the people — the real issue here is not housing, it’s water and sewerage,” he stated.
While acknowledging the national significance of the affordable housing initiative, Gachagua emphasized that public investments should respond to the most pressing needs on the ground.
Residents in the affected areas have repeatedly raised concerns about chronic water shortages and poor sanitation, citing health and environmental hazards.
Gachagua also warned potential buyers against investing in the affordable housing units, claiming the projects could be halted if the opposition wins the 2027 elections. He said any developments built on disputed land, particularly property owned by the PCEA church in Kajiado, risk being reversed.
“These are commercial ventures disguised as affordable housing. Investors should be cautious. If this land is forcibly taken from the church, a new government will return it — and you will lose your money,” he cautioned, adding that the land in question is legally owned by the Presbyterian Church of East Africa.
