Skoot Introduces Electric Tuk-Tuks in Nairobi

Electric mobility company Skoot Technology has unveiled a battery-swapping electric three-wheeler in Kenya, targeting tuk-tuk operators in urban areas looking to lower fuel expenses.

The new unit, known as the Skoot e3W, brings together a Piaggio-designed vehicle supplied locally by Car & General and SUN Mobility’s battery-swapping technology.

According to the partners, the three-wheeler has been tested for two years in Nairobi across varying road and load conditions to ensure reliability.

With the battery-swapping system, riders can exchange drained batteries for fully charged ones in just a few minutes, minimising downtime compared to conventional charging.

A rider travelling approximately 150 kilometres a day is expected to spend around Sh650 on battery swaps, compared to about Sh850 on diesel, offering potential savings of up to 30 percent.

The e3W will be offered on flexible lease options — daily, weekly, or monthly — starting at Sh1,200 per day, inclusive of maintenance. Operators will also access a mobile app to handle payments, find swap stations, and secure delivery jobs.

SUN Mobility’s entry into Kenya marks its first expansion into Africa after establishing operations in India, while Car & General will oversee distribution and after-sales support.

The rollout comes as electric mobility gains momentum in Kenya. Kenya Power data indicates that electric vehicles on local roads grew to roughly 35,000 by the end of 2025, up from 5,294 in 2024, largely driven by electric motorcycles and buses in major towns.
