M-Pesa Foundation Launches Sh30M School Upgrade in Murang’a

The M-Pesa Foundation has launched a Sh30 million school infrastructure project at Karimamwaro Primary School in Kandara Sub County, Murang’a County.

This project will focus on renovating six classrooms for Grades 1 to 6, constructing three junior secondary classrooms, upgrading an Early Childhood Development (ECDE) Centre, building a science laboratory, and setting up a fully equipped library and separate ablution blocks for boys, girls, and staff.

Additionally, the school will benefit from a water harvesting system with storage tanks to support water conservation efforts.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Safaricom Foundation chairman Joseph Ogutu highlighted the foundation’s commitment to improving lives through school renovations, particularly for the most disadvantaged communities, ensuring that all Kenyan children have access to quality education. He emphasized the transformative power of education in unlocking community potential and enhancing livelihoods.

Since its establishment in 2010, the M-Pesa Foundation has supported over 1.3 million learners across all 47 counties through infrastructure projects and its academy, which enrolls children from underprivileged backgrounds.

Education PS Belio Kipsang praised the foundation’s contribution to education and noted that the Ministry of Education is preparing for the transition of Grade 9 learners in January 2025. He also mentioned that Sh300 million had been allocated for the construction of Grade 9 classrooms, and that 9.9 million books had been distributed to Grade 9 students. Additionally, 20,000 new teachers have been recruited and trained to ensure smooth learning for these students.

Other attendees at the event included CS Agriculture and Livestock Development Dr. Andrew Karanja, PS Irrigation Ephantus Kimotho, KRA Chairperson Anthony Mwaura, and Murang’a County Women Representative Betty Maina.

As part of the ongoing National Tree Growing Restoration Campaign, the CS for Agriculture also donated 11,000 seedlings, including macadamia, Hass avocados, and coffee trees, to promote environmental restoration and sustainable farming.
