Eight Dead After Deadly Mombasa Road Night Crash

The number of people killed in a road accident along the Nairobi–Mombasa highway has risen to eight following the deaths of two more victims who were receiving treatment.

Machakos County Chief Officer for Medical Services Rashid Kalla said the two men died while undergoing treatment at Machakos Level 5 Hospital on Friday night. They were among several patients admitted after the crash.

Kalla explained that the accident occurred at about 10:05 pm near Konza City and involved a bus and a 19-seater Nissan matatu. Eleven injured victims were taken to Machakos Level 5 Hospital following the collision.

“Two male patients later succumbed to their injuries, raising the number of fatalities to eight. This includes six people—three men and three women—who were pronounced dead at the scene,” Kalla said.

He added that five of the remaining injured patients had been treated and discharged, while others were still receiving medical care as doctors continued to monitor their condition.

Kalla noted that the situation at the hospital was stable and under control, and conveyed condolences to the affected families while wishing the injured a quick recovery.

Earlier, Mukaa Sub-county Police Commander Hussein Abduba confirmed that six people died on the spot when the accident occurred on Friday night in the Katumani area near Konza Technopolis City, along the Machakos–Makueni county border.

Police said the crash involved a passenger bus and a matatu travelling in opposite directions on the busy highway.

Preliminary investigations suggest the matatu, which was heading from Nairobi, collided with the bus during an overtaking attempt.

Abduba said investigations into the cause of the accident were ongoing. The bodies of the deceased were taken to Machakos Level 5 Hospital mortuary, where they await identification and post-mortem examinations.

The police commander urged motorists to drive carefully, especially on major highways, stressing the importance of road safety to protect lives.
