MultiChoice Kenya Limited, the pay television service provider, has announced an increase in DStv subscription rates by up to six percent, marking the third adjustment in a year.
This move impacts households and businesses, adding strain to entertainment budgets.
Effective April 1, the DStv Premium package will witness the most significant increase, rising to Sh10,500 from Sh9,900, while the Compact Plus package will now cost Sh6,500, up from Sh6,200.
These adjustments follow the current prices set in August last year, with previous increases in April 2023.
The escalation in DStv rates coincides with mounting financial pressures on households and rising operational costs for businesses, attributed to increased taxation.
In notifications to customers, MultiChoice Kenya highlighted adjustments across various packages.
For instance, subscribers to the Family package will now pay Sh2,000, up from Sh1,850, while those on DStv Lite will see an increase to Sh700 from Sh600. Similarly, the Compact package will be priced at Sh3,700 per month, up from Sh3,500.
Notably, the Access package remains unaffected, maintaining its monthly subscription fee at Sh1,300.
Although reasons behind the latest price adjustment were not specified, MultiChoice Kenya previously cited rising business costs and currency depreciation as factors contributing to price increments.
The surge in subscription rates poses a potential challenge to MultiChoice Kenya’s objective of expanding its customer base beyond the 13 million subscribers recorded in Africa (excluding South Africa) by the end of September last year.
