Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has criticised opposition leader Rigathi Gachagua after the Opposition’s loss in the Mbeere North parliamentary by-election, describing the outcome as a rejection of divisive, region-based politics.
Speaking at Suneka Catholic Parish in Bonchari, Kisii County, during a Catholic MPs’ Spiritual Support Initiative event, Ruku said the results showed that Kenyans no longer support leaders who rely on regional dominance or self-proclaimed titles.

“Gachagua has been positioning himself as the Mt Kenya kingpin, but the people have spoken. His so-called kingship is self-made and lacks real support. Mbeere North proved that,” he said.
He added that the election was a test of leadership values, with voters favouring unity, peace, and development over confrontational politics.
“The era of hatred and division is behind us. Kenya is one nation, and no one can succeed by trying to divide it,” Ruku stated, criticising leaders who exploit regional identity for personal gain.
He applauded Mbeere North residents for their political maturity, noting that their choice reflected the community’s true aspirations.
“Our people chose peace, development, and continuity over noise. The message goes beyond Gachagua to any leader who thinks negativity wins votes,” he said.
Ruku encouraged those on the losing side to remain engaged, promising opportunities within President William Ruto’s inclusive government, and urged all Kenyans to support the administration’s development agenda.
He also warned young people against being manipulated by politicians for personal gains, citing instances where they were mobilised to intimidate voters or block polling stations.
“Let’s reject divisive narratives and safeguard our unity and future,” he concluded.
