Court Hands Uhuru Full Control of Jubilee Party

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has officially regained leadership of the Jubilee Party after the High Court upheld key resolutions from the party’s National Delegates Convention (NDC) held in May 2023.

In a ruling by the Milimani High Court’s Civil Division, a consent agreement between Jubilee’s legal team and key respondents nullified a prior decision by the Internal Disputes Resolution Committee (IDRC), which had invalidated the NDC outcomes.

The court affirmed the legitimacy of both the April 28 NEC meeting and the May 22 NDC, reinstating Uhuru’s leadership alongside Saitoti Torome as National Chairman and Jeremiah Kioni as Secretary General.

The court also directed that the resolutions be submitted to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) for formal adoption, which Jubilee’s legal team has begun to process.

This marks a significant setback for the Kanini Kega-led faction, which had earlier won a favorable ruling at the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) challenging Uhuru’s leadership.

In a twist, former Jubilee Chair Nelson Dzuya, once allied to the rebel group, withdrew opposition by consenting to the leadership changes initiated at the 2023 Special NDC.

During proceedings, Jubilee’s lawyer Jackson Awele argued the dispute had effectively ended, with the IDRC no longer having jurisdiction.

He also questioned the IDRC’s legal capacity, noting it is not a corporate entity capable of suing or being sued.
