Chernihiv Under Fire: Russian Missile Strike Kills Ten

By: BBC

A Russian missile strike in the northern Ukrainian city of Chernihiv has resulted in the deaths of ten individuals, as reported by Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky. Another 20 people were wounded in the attack, which targeted an eight-story building located in a densely populated area. According to officials, three missiles struck close to the city center.

This incident occurred shortly after reports of a Ukrainian assault on a Russian military airfield in occupied Crimea surfaced. Although details are still pending confirmation, local social media outlets shared videos depicting a fire at the Dzhankoy airfield in northern Crimea.

Acting mayor Oleksandr Lomako of Chernihiv stated that one of the Russian missiles directly hit a building, causing damage to several floors. Footage from the scene depicted individuals disembarking from a trolleybus and seeking shelter in the city. Authorities issued appeals for blood donations from the public.

President Zelensky attributed the Russian strike to Ukraine’s lack of adequate air defense equipment and reiterated his call for Western allies to offer support. Chernihiv, situated just 100km (60 miles) from the Russian border, has witnessed numerous deadly attacks since the onset of the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022. The city was occupied for several weeks at the war’s outset while Russia attempted to seize Kyiv to the south.

During a Monday interview on US television, Zelensky attributed Ukraine’s diminished air defenses to Russia’s recent destruction of a crucial thermal power plant supplying Kyiv and other regions. Zelensky disclosed that 11 missiles were fired at the Trypillya plant, with Ukrainian forces managing to intercept only seven of them. He emphasized the urgent need for a $60 billion US aid package, stalled by Republican objections in Congress for months.

Zelensky drew parallels between the world’s assistance to non-NATO member Israel during Iranian missile attacks and the political will needed to support Ukraine. He called for similar unity and aid to be extended to his country.
