The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has introduced a new series of banknotes for 2024, featuring enhanced security elements, starting with the Sh1,000 note.
In a statement released on Wednesday, CBK detailed that the 2024 series banknotes incorporate color-shifting security threads unique to each denomination.
The updated notes cover denominations of fifty shillings (KES 50), one hundred shillings (KES 100), two hundred shillings (KES 200), five hundred shillings (KES 500), and one thousand shillings (KES 1,000).
Additionally, the new notes will carry the signatures of CBK Governor Kamau Thugge and National Treasury Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo.
According to CBK, other features will remain consistent with the 2019 series.
The new security thread will appear as a continuous line that changes color when tilted. Under Ultra-Violet light, the golden band will reveal the banknote’s value.
CBK confirmed that existing banknotes will remain valid and will circulate alongside the newly issued ones.
The new-generation banknotes were initially introduced by former President Uhuru Kenyatta in December 2018, replacing the old currency that featured former Presidents Jomo Kenyatta, Daniel Moi, and Mwai Kibaki (Sh40 coin).
These updates adhere to Section 22 of the Central Bank of Kenya Act, which mandates that the Bank, in consultation with the Minister, determines the design and features of banknotes and coins, and must notify the public through the Gazette and other media.
