Car dealer Joseph Kairo, also known as Khalif Kairo, has been granted a Sh2 million cash bail after he denied accusations of failing to honor car sale agreements.
Milimani Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina, in his decision, stated that he did not find sufficient evidence to consider Kairo a flight risk.
Kairo faces two separate charges of fraud under section 315 of the Penal Code. For each charge, the court set a cash bail of Sh1 million or an alternative bond.
One of the charges involves Kairo allegedly using fraudulent tactics to convince Jeff Munane to pay Sh2.1 million between July 10 and July 25, 2024, for the importation of a Honda Vezel hybrid from Japan, which he never delivered. The money was transferred to Kairo’s company, Kai & Kairo Limited.
The second charge accuses Kairo of a similar offense involving Dona Okoth, who transferred Sh2.98 million to Kai & Kairo Limited’s KCB bank account between July 29 and November 16, 2024, for the purchase of a Subaru Outback, a transaction Kairo is said to have known was false.
The prosecution had requested that Kairo be denied bail, claiming he was a flight risk. However, Magistrate Onyina ruled that the charge was a misdemeanor and saw no reason to deny bail.
Regarding the Sh2.9 million charge, Kairo was granted a cash bail of Sh1 million with one contact person, and his passport will be held by the court. For the Sh2.1 million charge, he was given the same cash bail amount, with the option of a Sh1 million bond.
The court set the pre-trial date for January 28.
