A panel of Members of Parliament (MPs), led by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, commenced the vetting process for President William Ruto’s Cabinet nominees on Tuesday.

Among those undergoing scrutiny is former Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe, nominated to lead the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development.

During his appearance before the National Assembly Committee on Appointments in Nairobi, Kagwe pledged to make agriculture more appealing to the youth, describing the sector as currently “boring.” He emphasized the need to modernize farming by incorporating innovations like financial technology and artificial intelligence (AI) into agricultural training programs.

“Agriculture has to be made cool for the youth to embrace it. It is too boring at the moment and must evolve with technology and new methods,” Kagwe stated. He also expressed his intent to collaborate with the Ministry of Education to overhaul agricultural education, making it more engaging for the younger generation.

In addition, Kagwe addressed concerns surrounding misinformation about government initiatives in the agriculture sector. He acknowledged public backlash over initiatives like the mass livestock vaccination program, which has faced criticism from local communities and organizations.

Kagwe stated that improving the ministry’s communication strategy would be key to combating such disinformation.
