A key issue raised was the illegal recruitment of young Kenyans into the ongoing war in Ukraine. Ruto said both leaders agreed to create awareness about the risks of joining foreign military conflicts.

“We expressed concern over young Kenyans being unlawfully recruited to fight in the war,” Ruto said, adding that he had asked President Zelenskyy to help secure the release of any Kenyans detained in Ukraine.

“I am grateful to President Zelenskyy for agreeing to my request,” he noted.

President Zelenskyy, on his part, said he briefed Ruto on recent Russian strikes against civilians and critical infrastructure, and expressed appreciation for Kenya’s support and solidarity.

He further claimed that Russia has been recruiting foreign nationals to join its military campaign, describing the acts as fraudulent and criminal, and pledged closer collaboration with Kenya to stop the scheme.

“We discussed Russia’s recruitment of foreign citizens into its criminal war and agreed to work together to combat it,” Zelenskyy said.

The two presidents also reviewed global initiatives on food security, with Ruto commending Zelenskyy for organizing the upcoming Ukraine Food Summit. Ruto reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to supporting efforts that strengthen food supply chains and protect vulnerable nations from the ripple effects of war.

The conversation marks a deepening of diplomatic ties between Nairobi and Kyiv, as both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to protecting citizens from foreign exploitation and addressing the wider global impact of the ongoing conflict.
