Outspoken political activist Nuru Okanga, a staunch supporter of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, surprised many on Thursday, May 22, 2025, when he met with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Okanga, well known for his passionate political commentary and grassroots mobilisation, is a key figure in Bunge la Mwananchi, a civic platform that convenes regularly at Nairobi’s Jeevanjee Gardens for open political discussions and national issue debates.
He shared photos of the meeting on his Facebook page, including one where he posed mimicking the symbol of the newly unveiled Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), which Gachagua launched recently. However, Okanga did not disclose the purpose or content of their discussions.
“Today was my pleasure meeting with DCP party leader Hon. Rigathi Gachagua,” he captioned the post.
In a separate update, Okanga also posted pictures of his interactions with Safina Party leader Jimmy Wanjigi and lawyer Willis Otieno, sparking speculation about a possible political shift.
His recent presence during the court appearance of Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya further fueled talk of changing political loyalties.
Once a fierce critic of Gachagua—often attacking him in public forums at Bunge la Mwananchi—Okanga has consistently defended Raila Odinga and made headlines with his provocative public statements. His influence, particularly on social media and in grassroots activism, has kept him in the political spotlight.

In 2024, Okanga faced charges over comments he made about President William Ruto, illustrating his controversial and confrontational political style.
Despite questions about the extent of his influence, Okanga has captured the attention of high-profile politicians. In August last year, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi pledged to transform Okanga’s life, gifting him Sh1.3 million to start a business after the two appeared on the Obinna TV Show. Sudi also promised to help him acquire a three-bedroom house through the affordable housing initiative.
During the show, Okanga shared that he is the main provider for his family and hoped to open a salon for his wife but lacked the funds. “If I get Sh300,000 for her, that would be enough. I want her to stay occupied,” he said.
He added: “I, Nuru Okanga, have many problems, but let me be direct—if you can give me Sh1 million, my life would change significantly.”
