President Samia Suluhu Hassan has dissolved the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) board due to public dissatisfaction with frequent power rationing.
Former board chair Major General Paul Kisesa Simuli now serves as Tanzania’s ambassador to Uganda, while Dr Rhimo Nyansaho takes over as the new board chair.
This change in leadership reflects broader shifts within Tanesco, with former boss Mr Maharage Chande reassigned, and Mr Gissima Nyamo-Hanga now in his position. Tanzania faces power rationing due to reduced generation caused by low water levels in dams and necessary infrastructure repairs.
Maintenance issues and climate-induced water shortages contribute to a 400-megawatt shortfall, impacting industries like beverage manufacturing, as noted by Paul Makanza of the Confederation of Tanzania Industries.
