Zebra on Your Plate? KWS Seizes 2 Tonnes of Meat

Four individuals have been arrested after the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) confiscated an estimated two tonnes of suspected zebra meat in an intelligence-driven operation in Gikambura, Kiambu County.

The Wednesday raid targeted a suspected bushmeat supply chain, with follow-up enforcement carried out at Dagoretti Market in Nairobi County.

Authorities recovered six sacks of de-boned zebra meat, one fully skinned zebra carcass, and 15 frozen meat packages weighing roughly 250 grams each. The total seizure amounted to about 2,000 kilograms, in addition to 7.5 kilograms of packaged frozen meat.

The four suspects are in custody as investigations continue, with KWS working to trace the source of the meat and uncover the broader network behind the illegal trade.

“KWS will not relent in its fight against illegal wildlife trade. The killing and sale of protected wildlife is a serious crime under Kenyan law,” the agency stated.

Under the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act (Cap 376), it is illegal to kill, possess, transport, or trade in wildlife without proper authorization.

KWS said the seizure highlights the scale of the illegal bushmeat trade and pledged to intensify surveillance and enforcement to combat poaching and illicit meat distribution. The public was urged to report any suspected wildlife crimes through official KWS channels.
