Wanga Speaks Out After Magwanga’s Shock Exit

Gladys Wanga has dismissed claims that she played a part in the resignation of Oyugi Magwanga, even as she formally accepted his exit and declared the deputy governor’s seat vacant with immediate effect.

In a statement released Friday through the Governor’s Office, Wanga confirmed receiving Magwanga’s resignation letter dated February 26, 2026. She said the acceptance was guided by Article 181(1) of the Constitution and Section 32C(b) of the County Governments Act.

“I hereby declare the Office of the Deputy Governor, Homa Bay County, vacant with effect from February 26, 2026,” she announced.

Although Magwanga cited persistent and irreconcilable differences as the reason for stepping down, Wanga suggested that the strain in their working relationship stemmed from what she termed his continued focus on future political ambitions. She argued that such preoccupation undermined the unity and dedication expected within the deputy governor’s office.

Wanga emphasized that Homa Bay residents deserve full-time commitment from their executive leaders.

She also revisited Magwanga’s political track record, noting that ahead of the 2022 General Election, he had initially sought the governor’s seat before agreeing to deputize her at the urging of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to promote party unity.

The governor further cited the November 27, 2025, Kasipul parliamentary by-election, where Magwanga publicly opposed the ODM candidate. According to Wanga, his decision to support independent aspirant Philip Aroko instead of the party’s nominee, Boyd Were, highlighted divisions within the county’s leadership.

Magwanga, however, offered a contrasting account during a press briefing on Thursday. He claimed he had been sidelined and frustrated, alleging that he was locked out of his office from December 2025 and that his official vehicles were withdrawn, effectively crippling his office.

After consultations with political allies, supporters, and family, Magwanga said he opted to resign with immediate effect, describing the work environment as untenable and lacking the necessary support to fulfill his constitutional duties.

Despite the unfolding political rift, Wanga assured residents that county operations would proceed without disruption. She maintained that service delivery remains steady and pledged that the vacancy will be filled in line with the law.
