Oyugi Magwanga has stepped down as Homa Bay County Deputy Governor. Speaking to the media on Thursday, February 26, 2026, Magwanga said his decision was prompted by irreconcilable differences with Governor Gladys Wanga.
He stated that he leaves office with a clear conscience and remains committed to advocating for integrity, prudent management of public resources, and effective service delivery for the people of Homa Bay.

Magwanga also declared his intention to run for the gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election, where he is expected to challenge Wanga.
His resignation follows months of strained relations between the two leaders, marked by political and administrative disputes. The rift became evident during the November 27, 2025, Kasipul parliamentary by-election, when Magwanga backed candidate Philip Aroko while Wanga campaigned for Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) candidate Boyd Were.
The by-election deepened divisions within the county leadership and is widely viewed as the turning point in their fallout. Soon after, Wanga reshuffled her administration, removing several senior officials, including Magwanga from his additional role as County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Agriculture. Dr Peter Ogolla was also dismissed from his position as CEC Member for Lands, with the governor saying the changes were aimed at improving service delivery.
Tensions escalated further when Magwanga moved to court earlier this month, accusing the governor of locking his office and preventing him from carrying out his constitutional duties. He argued that being denied access to his office effectively left him unable to serve residents, insisting that he could not execute his responsibilities without proper workspace and resources.
Magwanga maintained that he had increasingly been sidelined from key decision-making processes within the county government, limiting his role in governance.
His resignation now sets the stage for a possible political showdown in 2027 as Homa Bay’s top leadership battle shifts into the open.
