Two people lost their lives in a tragic road accident in Nyakach, near Onyuongo, along the Kisumu-Kisii road, highlighting ongoing road safety concerns during the festive period.
The fatal crash occurred around 2 p.m. when a cyclist collided with a private vehicle. Both the cyclist and their pillion passenger died instantly.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the vehicle’s occupants, who escaped with only minor damage to their car.
The bodies of the deceased were transported to Pap Onditi Sub-County Mortuary, while the damaged vehicle was taken to Katito Police Station. Authorities have initiated an investigation into the cause of the collision.
This incident comes amid alarming statistics on road safety in Kenya, where over 4,000 people die in traffic accidents each year. Police attribute the high toll to reckless driving and the presence of unsafe vehicles on the roads.
In response to the increasing number of fatalities, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen recently called for stricter adherence to traffic rules, emphasizing the need for road discipline during the holiday season to prevent further accidents.
Murkomen highlighted that traffic congestion and accidents often result from irresponsible driving, and warned that law enforcement would take firm action against violators.
“As Kenyans prepare for the festive season, I want to assure them of their safety,” Murkomen stated, vowing increased coordination with the Ministry of Transport to improve road safety measures.
