59 Students Rushed to Hospital after Consuming Wild fruit in Athi River

Yesterday, more than 59 students from Canaan Integrated Primary School were urgently admitted to Athi River Level 4 Hospital following their consumption of wild fruit found on the school premises.

Complaints of stomach pains and vomiting among the students prompted the school authorities to summon an ambulance for immediate medical attention.

County Health Executive Dr. Daniel Yumbya reported that out of the total, 8 students required admission to the hospital due to severe pain, while the rest were discharged last night.

As of this morning, 7 of the 8 hospitalized students have been discharged, leaving only one still under observation.

According to the school principal, the students consumed fruits gathered from a tree within the school compound during their lunch break yesterday.

Samples of the consumed fruits have been forwarded to the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) for thorough analysis.

In light of the incident, the school administration has been advised to take necessary measures to eradicate the trees from the school premises to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

“We have submitted the wild fruit samples consumed by the students to KEMRI for examination and have instructed our public health officers to eradicate the remaining trees in compliance with safety protocols,” stated Dr. Yumbya in a press release.

Additionally, the county government has covered all expenses related to the students’ medical treatment.
