Two police officers in Kisii County are at risk of being fired after organizing a party with illicit brew inside the cells.
According to Kisii County Commissioner, Mr. Patrick Mukuria, the surprising incident occurred on January 25, 2024, at Rioma police station.
“An investigation has revealed that two officers serving at the police station, identified as Constable Erick Mogoi and Constable Francis Ngugi, were on duty when they decided to throw a party with illicit brew for the detainees,” he said.
Mr. Mukuria stated that among the detainees were two murder suspects whom the court had ordered to be detained pending further investigation.
“The detainees’ names are Mathew Omanga and David Mboga. The officers provided them with a portion of illicit brew whose source remains unknown, and the party began,” he said.
It is unclear whether the detainees requested to be entertained or if the officers were spontaneously generous and deemed it fit to provide the detainees with alcohol.
Mr. Mukuria mentioned that the joyous songs and celebrations from both the officers and the detainees caught the attention of the station superiors, prompting them to investigate.
“It was then that the two officers were found heavily intoxicated, singing liberation songs, while the detainees were also inebriated, dancing to relieve their troubles in their respective cells,” he said.
A search to find the source of the alcohol that had uplifted their spirits was conducted, and the container used to smuggle the illicit brew was found empty inside the cells.
“Subsequently, a decision was made to transport the suspects and the police officers to Kisii police station, where after an alcoblow test, it was confirmed that they were heavily intoxicated. The container along with the alcoblow test results were preserved as evidence, while disciplinary actions are being considered by the authorities,” he said.
