UoN Tops Kenya in Latest Global University Rankings

The University of Nairobi (UoN) has been ranked as Kenya’s highest-performing university in the latest Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR), making it the only Kenyan institution featured in the global listing.

In the 2026 CWUR World University Rankings, UoN was placed 1,425th globally and 37th in Africa out of 21,462 universities evaluated worldwide. This positions it among the top seven per cent of universities globally.

The CWUR rankings assess universities based on four main indicators: quality of education, alumni employability, faculty quality, and research performance. Unlike many other global ranking systems, CWUR does not rely on surveys or data submitted by institutions.

Research performance carries the highest weight at 40 per cent, while education quality and employability each account for 25 per cent. Faculty quality makes up the remaining 10 per cent.

The University of Nairobi also ranked 1,371st globally in research performance and 1,596th in graduate employability, reinforcing its position as Kenya’s leading institution in academic output and research impact.

The ranking is widely regarded as one of the most objective global assessments due to its reliance on independently verifiable data rather than institutional self-reporting.

Reacting to the achievement, UoN Vice Chancellor Prof. Ayub Gitau said the recognition reflects the university’s growing research influence and the contribution of its academic community.

He noted that the milestone highlights the dedication of faculty, researchers, staff, students and alumni in strengthening the university’s global reputation.

Gitau added that the institution’s next focus will be on enhancing collaboration, improving internal cohesion, and translating research into practical solutions that benefit society.

He expressed confidence that the university has the capacity to rise further among leading global institutions.

At the global level, the rankings continue to be dominated by universities from the United States and the United Kingdom, with institutions such as Harvard University, MIT, Stanford University, and the University of Oxford occupying top positions.

In Africa, universities in South Africa and Egypt maintained their dominance, with the University of the Witwatersrand ranked as the continent’s best, followed by the University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch University.

Other high-performing African institutions included Cairo University, the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Ain Shams University, the University of Pretoria, Mansoura University and Alexandria University, reflecting the continued strength of South African and Egyptian higher education systems.
