Police in Nairobi are conducting a thorough investigation into the suspicious death of an unidentified woman whose dismembered body was discovered at an Airbnb residence in Roysambu.
The unsettling series of events unfolded when the male guest responsible for booking the room returned the key early on Sunday morning and disappeared abruptly.
Risper Muthoni, the manager of the Airbnb property, disclosed that the unknown suspect had booked the room on Saturday, January 13, at 3 p.m. According to the property’s policy, guests are entitled to an uninterrupted stay until the scheduled check-out time once payment is made.
The disturbing discovery was made on Sunday morning when the caretaker reported finding suspicious polythene bags and a blood-soaked bedsheet on the staircase.
Despite several attempts to get a response, Muthoni and her team entered the unlocked room, finding everything seemingly normal except for bloodstains at the door. Subsequently, they reported the findings at Kasarani police station. The police were provided with the suspect’s identity and relevant CCTV footage from a nearby location where the keys were picked up.
Law enforcement officers were observed handling polythene bags and a blood-soaked bedsheet, believed to contain the remains of the deceased woman on Sunday. Jimmy Kimari, the head of Kasarani Divisional Criminal Investigations, present at the scene, issued a stern warning of impending crackdowns on Airbnb operators without security cameras and urged them to maintain detailed guest records.
The discovery of the woman’s body comes shortly after the arrest of John Matara, a suspected serial offender implicated in the killing of socialite Starlet Wahu inside an Airbnb in Nairobi’s South B area. Wahu’s lifeless body was discovered in a pool of blood after the Airbnb’s security reported the incident to authorities.
HIV test kits, used condoms, bhang, a bottle of alcohol, and a blood-stained kitchen knife believed to be the murder weapon were recovered at the scene. Reports suggest signs of a struggle between Wahu and her killer, as the scene appeared bloody, disarrayed, and chaotic. Matara hastily left the premises on Thursday morning, wearing bloodstained clothes, and was later apprehended at Mbagathi Hospital, where he was being treated for a stab wound to his stomach.
Wahu was laid to rest on Saturday at her parents’ home in Ruai’s Kamulu area. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has stated that the ongoing investigation points to “a possible serial sexual offender who thrives on blackmail to his victims,” possibly part of a criminal ring targeting women on dating sites and social media.
