Renowned Publisher Dr. Henry Chakava Passes Away at 77

Esteemed publisher Dr. Henry Chakava has passed away.

At 77, he was the founder and Chairman of East African Educational Publishers Limited. His remarkable career in African publishing leaves behind a significant legacy.

Kiarie Kamamu, Managing Director and CEO of East African Educational Publishers, announced Dr. Chakava’s passing, noting his pivotal role in acquiring Heinemann (East Africa), later renamed East African Educational Publishers.

Dr. Chakava’s influence extended to publishing renowned literary figures like Ngugi Wa Thiong’o, Chinua Achebe, and Cyprian Ekwensi, among others.

Born in Vokoli, Vihiga County, Dr. Chakava began his career after studying literature and philosophy in 1972.

His contributions include reshaping educational books with an African perspective, previously dominated by Western culture.
