A bold funeral tribute by a young woman has sparked widespread debate online after she openly criticized relatives during her father’s burial, breaking away from the usual tradition of restrained and diplomatic speeches at Kenyan funerals.
In many cases, funeral speeches tend to gloss over family conflicts or difficult truths in an effort to maintain unity. However, in this instance, the daughter delivered a candid and direct address that left mourners uneasy.

Speaking in a mix of Swahili and English, she accused some close relatives of neglecting her father during his illness, only to appear after his death with financial contributions.
In a video clip circulating online, the young woman began by noting she had much to say but would keep her remarks brief—and she quickly got to the point.
She described her father as a supportive figure not only to his own children but also to extended family members, including his brother’s children.
She then mentioned specific relatives, including one who did not attend the burial due to financial challenges, asking mourners to pray for him.
Another relative, however, was sharply criticised. She sarcastically “thanked” him, pointing out that he could not afford a small amount of fare to visit her father while he was ill but managed to spend a much larger amount to attend the funeral.
She questioned the contradiction, suggesting her father had been hospitalised in Nairobi, and highlighted what she viewed as misplaced priorities.
The speaker went on to say that, throughout her father’s illness and burial arrangements, friends had offered more meaningful support than relatives. She urged people not to overly depend on family during difficult times, saying friends often step in when needed most.
She further claimed that the relative she criticised did not even make an effort to check on her father during his illness but later called to confirm burial details after his passing.
Using sarcasm, she mocked the situation, even asking for applause for the relative’s contribution during the funeral.
She also pointed out that while the relative failed to assist during the illness, he later brought items to the funeral, which she acknowledged but contrasted with his earlier absence.
Despite the criticism, she ended her speech by thanking those who stood by the family during the difficult period and described her father as a loving parent.
The clip has since triggered mixed reactions online. Some praised her honesty, saying it reflects a younger generation’s willingness to confront uncomfortable truths.
Others, however, criticised her remarks, arguing that people face different personal struggles and may not always be in a position to offer support.
Some commentators defended her stance, saying it is important to speak openly about realities within families, while others suggested that funeral speeches should be more controlled to avoid exposing private family matters in public.
